Ventilation and Your Roof: An Interview with Mike Wisdom of Wisdom Roofing, Inc

By Mike Wisdom

Tell us a little bit about your experience, company history and the services you offer.

I have over 40 years experience in the roofing industry; I started Wisdom Roofing in 1993 and we offer residential, commercial roofing, guttering, and vinyl siding installations.

What's one of the biggest challenges that homeowners face when it comes to ventilation and their roofs?

Most homeowners know little to nothing about roof ventilation and leave the decisions of which products and how much of each product up to the roofing contractor to make the right call and install what is best for the type of structure we are venting.

What are the most popular roofing ventilation materials you install and how long does the process take from start to finish?

The products available on the market range from ridge vents to passive vents (turtle vents) to electric or solar powered vents to the old fashioned turbines which are rarely used today. Along with roof ventilation soffit vents must be installed in order for the roof vents to function properly.

What are some important things a homeowner should consider before hiring a roofing contractor?

Get references from friends, family or other trusted people. Look for longevity and professionalism. Check with the Oklahoma contractors licensing board and verify that they are licensed and in good standing, this will let you know they are carrying workers compensation and liability insurance. Check with local BBB and look at any complaints filed and how they were handled.

Can you explain the typical length of a roof warranty and what it should cover?

With a new roof you will have two warranties (1) one provided by the manufacturer that can range from 20 years to a lifetime warranty, this covers manufacturing defects in the shingles. (2) You will also receive a warranty from the contractor installing the roof and these warranties can vary greatly depending on the contractors standard warranty generally from 1-5 years and if the contractor has completed manufacturers training can give extended warranties backed by the manufacturer.

What's the best way for people to reach you and your company?
