Putting the Posh in Doggy Day Care

By Kelly Church

Posh Paws is an Oklahoma dog boarding and grooming facility for pets that doesn't just offer a bath with room and board. With locations in Moore and Oklahoma City, this facility focuses on letting animals out in their interactive play areas, complete with cameras, and socializing their pet guests with one another. Owner Vera Mahen believes all pet care facilities should focus their efforts on socializing the animals, something that keeps the pets happy and aids in expelling energy.

"Play yards are a great way to get pets to interact and become social," Mahen says. "We have five interactive play yards, indoor and outdoor access, ranging from teacups to large dogs. You can bring your dog for the day while you go to work, run errands, go to your doctors' appointments. We also offer overnight boarding if you are going out of town, or having repairs done on your house, or even want to have a night out."

Each play yard is equipped with a camera. The Posh Paws website live streams the dogs in the play yards on their website or their smart phone application. Mahen says at any time pet owners can "watch your furry family member playing and making friends on our webcams."

Mahen explains that the staff at Posh Paws is extremely hands-on with the dogs during their stay. They have a rigid routine: 6:30 a.m. potty break, breakfast and medications, one hour rest to let their food settle, play time until lunch or nap time, (which lasts one hour,) back into the play yards before dinner at 4 p.m., and one last yard play at 5 p.m. until close at 7 p.m. when they're put back in their rooms for the night. Their schedule stays this way Monday through Friday and only varies slightly on weekends since Posh Paws opens 30 minutes later and is closed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"Our kennel staff is out in the yards interacting with the dogs throughout the day," Mahen says. "Everything from cleaning play yards to make sure they are sanitary to playing and interacting with the dogs. When new dogs come into our facility, we watch them carefully to make sure they play well with others. A majority of our time is making sure all dogs get along and they are safe while here."

Every dog that is dropped off for either day care or extended boarding is given the option of a bath before pickup. Mahen tries to make each dog's stay as comfortable and accommodating as possible, saying that once a dog stays with them, "they are part of the Posh Paws family."
