Installing Custom Iron Work in Your Home: An Interview with Grant York of York Metal Fabricators

By Grant York

Tell us a little about your company and the services you offer.

We are a custom metal fabrication company, historically focused on the custom ornamental handrail market in commercial construction. We have done custom work for some high-end homes in the past, and we are looking to grow in the residential market.

Can you describe what custom steel work is for people who may not know?

As opposed to traditional ornamental iron work that people are familiar with, we work with a more modern, streamlined approach using nonferrous metals (aluminum, stainless steel, bronze, glass, etc.) to create new and unique designs for stair, ramp, and balcony railings.

What are the most common things in a home that people want custom steel work products for?

Obvious areas would be stairs, walkways, or openings in a second or third floor overlooking lower areas. Anywhere that you might have a fall risk.

What are some of the advantages of installing custom steel work over ready-made products?

We provide fully welded, unique solutions to our customers' needs. Instead of trying to apply a "one size fits all" kit rail out of the box that may or may not actually work, we offer over 50 years of experience in providing the highest quality of railings for a fair price.

Does custom steel work require any special maintenance or care?

Depending on the finish selected by the customer, most of our products require nothing more than dusting. Aluminum can be anodized or powder coated, depending on the look one wants to achieve. Stainless steel is usually offered in a brushed finish similar to kitchen appliances that hides most scratches and can be rubbed down and then lightly cleaned to minimize future damage. Bronze can have some upkeep depending on the finish you choose, either polished or brushed, lacquered or natural.

What advice would you give to homeowners who are starting to remodel/redecorate and want to install some custom steel works?

If you want to feature something that we refer to as "jewelry" for the home, start out with a plan and consult someone with experience in this kind of work early on. Do not wait to the last minute, as our lead times can be rather long depending on the work and our workload. Time is your friend if you plan ahead. Just like anything you expect to last for 50 years in a home, quality isn't cheap, but making a mistake and going with a low-priced mistake can end up costing you money and trouble in the long run.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?
