Installing Custom Iron Work in Your Home: An Interview with Robert Bryan of Iron Masters

By Robert Bryan

Tell us a little about your company and the services you offer.

Iron Masters is a custom ornamental iron company in Oklahoma City. We were established in 1952 and serve a wide range of customers, including homeowners, builders, interior designers, retail stores, and even the occasional band needing a gigantic flying saucer disco ball! We custom make every piece here in the shop and offer a wide variety of finishes. Our install crew then delivers the final product using the same careful and precise methods that we have practiced for years, providing a final product that completes the look of your project and stands the test of time. We provide a wide range of products and services, from iron work for historical renovations to classic iron styles to very clean-lined modern pieces. From the smallest porch railing to several hundred feet of ornamental fence, no project is too big or too small for us.

Can you describe what custom iron work is for people who may not know?

Custom iron work can mean a wide variety of things. At its core, it is any piece of metal work that isn't prefabricated in a factory. Instead, it is built by one of our master fabricators to customer specifications, providing a wider range of options and an accurate fit for your space. Often this means hand-shaping metal that is heated to high temperatures in a forge using both modern tools as well as centuries-old blacksmithing techniques to create unique pieces and looks that no other material can replicate.

What are the most common things in a home that people want custom iron work products for?

Some of our most common requests are both walk-through and drive gates, iron fencing for both yards and pools, interior and exterior railings, and spiral staircases. We also make hood vents, curtain rods, mailboxes, faux balconies, light fixtures, and anything else our customers can dream up. If it's made of metal, we can make it.

What are some of the advantages of installing custom iron work over ready-made products?

Custom iron work is welded together, which provides for a superior bond. A lot of pre-made products are not as sturdy, made of thinner gauge materials and oftentimes bolted together. These products tend to loosen up over time. Everything we install is welded together from end to end, providing a stable, durable piece that will be around for as long as your home is. When you choose custom, the possibilities are endless, which will give you a one-of-a-kind piece that stands out from among the ready-made products out there.

Does custom iron work require any special maintenance or care?

The only special care is that exterior iron work will have to be repainted very occasionally, just like anything else outdoors. We use durable, high-quality enamel paint that holds up to the elements to minimize this; some customers go up to 30 years before repainting.

What advice would you give to homeowners who are starting to remodel/redecorate and want to install some custom iron works?

Give us a call. Even if you're not sure of what you want, our design team can help you pick out something you'll love. Whether it's a bold statement piece or something more subtle, we can help you complete your space.

What's the best way for people to contact you and your company?

Give us a call Monday to Friday at 405-787-0211, or email us at info@ironmasters.com. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon.
