How to Refinish Natural Stone with Todd Crow of TNT Floors

By Todd Crow

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer.

We are a Oklahoma family owned and operated business that was established in 1995. We are trained in the field of natural stone refinishing. Natural stones such as Marble, Travertine, Limestone, Onyx, Granite as well as Terrazzo can be refinished and can be performed on floors, counter tops, vanities, table tops, etc.

Can you briefly explain what stone refinishing is?

Stone refinishing consists of honing off layers of stone where any damage may have occurred and expose a fresh layer of the stone and then through the continuous use of various diamond and polishing abrasives bring the surface to the desired appearance- matte, semi-polished or a high polish finish. There are no topical coatings used. The shine created is from the stone itself.

What are the most common reasons why people want or need to get their stone surfaces refinished?

Refinishing is needed when the stone develops wear paths, has been etched, scratched or damaged, or is simply duller than when new. Instead of replacing your stone, which can be messy, costly, and lengthy, you can simply refinish your stone and save time, money, and the hassle and have your stone look like new again.

What are the main steps in the process?

Refinishing stone is usually a multi-step process. We start by honing the stone with a diamond embedded disc or pad of the appropriate grit to get the damage removed from the stone then progressively work the grits higher until the desired finish is achieved or until the stone is ready to be polished to a high shine with fine abrasives. Final step for us is sealing the stone.

Why should people hire a professional to refinish their stone surfaces instead of doing it themselves?

This type of work is not normally done by the homeowner due to the knowledge and expertise needed to not damage the stone as well as the need for equipment and supplies which can have a steep learning curve. Every stone is made up of various mineral contents. Thus each stone will react differently and requires assorted methods, diamonds and polishing abrasives to achieve the desired appearance. We have been to two professional training classes and spent years acquiring experience on many types of stone.
