Greek House Welcomes New Family Owners Bringing Norman the Same Classics

In 1979, the Greek House opened its doors for the first time. The small eatery began by serving foods such as shish kabobs and gyros. Over time, gyros began to show their popularity in leaps and bounds, causing them to become the main dish on the Greek House menu. Three decades later and the gyros still dominate the menu.

After thirty years of same ownership, the Greek House recently passed hands. It had been a long road for the original owners, and the Greek House sought them well, but they opted to take a step back and retire. The business was sold to another devoted family, the Tajbakhsh family, and things have continued on their original path.

"We wanted to keep everything the same because people of Norman liked it the way it was, especially the design which has an old Greek tavern look," states Nima Tajbakhsh, son of the new owner. It was this authentic design that is attributed to the popularity of the Greek House. But, as Tajbakhsh will tell you, it is more than that...the design is reminiscent of days gone by. "Over the years, we've had many customers who told us that this place reminded them of their college years and the fact that design was kept the same, made them reminisce their childhood memories and/or college days," he explained.

Of course, the new owners did make some improvements but they were careful not to alter the bones of the restaurant, keeping the foundation that sets it apart intact. "We added an ATM machine since we're cash only business and also upgraded the whole kitchen with better equipment so we could better serve our customers," Tajbakhsh says. In addition, the changes included adding hummus and falafel to the menu, which added to the Mediterranean experience and gives vegetarian customers more variety than just a salad.

When it comes to the Greek House, Tajbakhsh says he knows exactly what makes it special. "I think what makes Greek House special is that we value our customers and customize each order to how our customers like it," he affirms. "In addition to all that, being that this is family business we know our regular customers and what their order is so when they come we already have their order written down which our customers are very fond of." This sense of family, of friendship, the comfort levels felt by the regulars?and not so regulars?shows deeply in their online reviews.

And it is part of the reason why, coming close to four decades later, the Greek House is still going strong.
