Edmond Family Counseling Helps Give Edmond the Support it Needs

By Elisha Neubauer

Edmond Family Counseling is doing their part to make the community stronger, healthier, and more united. A professional resource for counseling, they follow a simple mission: to help their clients thrive throughout each stage of their life development. They don't do it alone. Edmond Family Counseling partners with churches, schools, businesses, lawyers, and more to ensure each and every member of the Edmond community gets the support they need when they need it.

The prominent organization got its start as a grassroots movement designed to support teens during the afterschool hours. Founded by several churches, the supervised recreation program adapted with the changes occurring within the Edmond community. As the area grew in size and changed in demographics (from a 'bedroom community' to an urban area), Edmond Family Counseling changed with it.

The organization now serves over 1,400 individuals?offering a wide range of services, programs, and referrals.

One of the top services Edmond Family Counseling offers is perhaps the DUI/ADSAC assessment. These assessments are provided by Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors and Assessors and are completed in partnership with attorneys, individuals, and the court system. They are timely, professional, and respected assessments. The agency also offers a 10 or 24 hour DUI class located on-site. Counseling for alcohol and substance abuse, drug testing, and classes for both adolescents and adults are offered as well.

"Edmond Family Counseling is super proud of our community partnerships like the one we have with the City of Edmond and the Edmond Public Schools," Kathy Matthews, M. Ed., Communications, Development Coordinator for Edmond Family Counseling. The partnership with EPS focuses on 3rd grade, 5th grade, and middle school students using concepts from Botvin Life Skills.

"The goal of each program is to equip students to be resilient, reflect and make better choices, set goals, and regulate emotions as they transition through school," states Matthews. The hope for the program is that students will take these newly learned skills forward, into their adulthoods, and thus lower the incidents of anxiety, depression, substance abuse and suicide. Edmond Family Counseling also offers individual aid to schools for special instances, when support is requested in order to enrich and serve their student population.

The organization provides support for individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, addiction, anger management, and emotional behavioral issues. Special programs include parenting through divorce, life skills middle school programs, and BeEdmond, a mobile app/website designed to provide teens and young adults with the community resources they need on the go.

Edmond Family Counseling has been operating for over 42 years now, with no plans to stop any time soon. The not for profit organization aims to continue to be a driving force for change and support within the Edmond community. "We are proud to have grown and expanded right along with Edmond," says Matthews.
