The Deck Restoration Process: An Interview with Vic Vickers of Handymen R' Us, Inc

By Vic Vickers

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation:

Handymen R' Us, Inc is an Oklahoma Corporation. This is our 21st year of being in business. Handymen R' Us is basically a remodeling company that does a lot of handyman work, both residential and commercial. We've been awarded the Angie's List Super Service Award 5 consecutive years. We're a member of the National Homebuilders Association as well as the Oklahoma Home Builders Association. Vic, CEO and Founder, is a graduate of CAPS and UDB (Certified Aging in Place Specialist and Universal Design and Build. We help people stay in their homes longer (aging in place) by adapting their homes to fit their needs rather than them having to go to an assisted living facility etc. Vic also serves as president for 2 small business clubs and is vice president for the Oklahoma State Remodelers Council. Handymen R' Us is an insured and bonded company using skilled sub-contractors. We stay on the Project until it is completed. We don't pull of in the middle of a Project and go start another one. In most cases, you pay when we're done and you're satisfied with the job. We accept American Express, Visa, and Mastercard credit cards as well as Cash, Check, or Money Order as methods of payment.

What are some signs a deck need maintenance, or to be repaired?

Generally speaking, decks in need of repair will exhibit several signs: curling up of the deck boards, a bouncy feeling, splintering of decking, loss of appearance, etc.

What deck restoration materials do you prefer to use?

Usually Behr, from Home Depot.

What is the process of restoring a deck?

This would start with effecting the necessary repairs with new materials, power washing the deck, railing, etc and then applying a stain sealer as selected by the Homeowner.

Do you have any handy tips for homeowners who might attempt this themselves?

Many times Homeowners can watch a video or read a How To publication and if they have the necessary skills and equipment can affect the restoration themselves.

Why do you suggest hiring a professional for this service?

As with a lot of repairs that seem simple from reading or watching a How To, homeowners will generally find themselves running back and forth to Home Depot etc. in order to get the right equipment and materials, etc, whereas the professional repair person can come in, evaluate the deck, bid the repairs, and then take care of it in a good workmanlike manner. As an example, we use coated screws to attach all of the materials we use in a deck; make sure the deck meets local code requirements regarding railings, baluster spacing etc. Things that a Homeowner may not know. We also call, in our area OKIE Before You Dig, to come out and spot the utilities so we don't disrupt electrical, cable, gas service etc.
