Ashtanga Yoga Studio Strives to Heal the Community One Class at a Time

By Elisha Neubauer

Andrew Eppler wanted a circle of peers that practiced yoga in the same method he did. However, living in Norman, Oklahoma in the '90s made that difficult as there were no yoga studios in the area. Eppler knew that the only way to achieve this vision was to create it for himself. And that's exactly what he did.

In 1999, Eppler launched Ashtanga Yoga Studio. He had a strong belief that yoga could heal people and he wanted to bring that healing to the community. Ashtanga blends a unique mix of modern yoga and classical yoga with Tibetan and Northern Indian roots. This pairing allows for a practice which is all-inclusive, open to all regardless of physical fitness, religious, or philosophical views. "We believe yoga is for everyone and the only thing required is a willingness to learn," states Eppler.

At Ashtanga, they follow a format of Vinyasa Yoga in which they utilize structured sequences of positions and postures along with deep breathing techniques. This practice places a focus on synchronizing movement with breath, creating an internal heat that encourages stretching and flexibility. "This practice creates change in the body very quickly and the sequences empower students to take yoga into their daily life and develop a personal practice," Eppler says on his website.

In addition to the practice of yoga, Ashtanga Yoga Studio is also home to the Third Eye Gallery, an art gallery dedicated to local artists. "We focus on art that is inspired by the artist's spiritual journey, regardless of how they may choose to express it," explains Eppler. "In our experience yoga tends to inspire creativity and sometimes it comes out as amazing art!"

Eppler claims that it has been his absolute pleasure to help share that art with the local community over the last several years. The gallery is open to the public and operates during set hours: Monday 4-8, Tuesday and Friday 6-8, Wednesday and Thursday 6-9, Saturday 10-5, and Sunday 1:30-7:30. It is available upon appointment request, as well.

Several Massage Therapies are offered on-site at the studio, as well. A selection of therapists utilizing a wide range of therapies ensure you get exactly what you need out of your session. Swedish, Deep Tissue, Thai, Body Wraps, Reiki, Ashiatsu, Ashi-Thai, Thai-Yoga, Prenatal, Applied Kinesiology, and Awareness through Movement are all options available to clients at the Ashtanga Yoga Studio.

For those new to the practice, Ashtanga features introduction classes each and every day. Drop-in students are always welcome. For those who already have a foundation in the practice and are looking to expand, Ashtanga hosts teacher training classes which span 200 hours of approved Yoga Alliance schooling. Free youth classes are also available as well as a smattering of other course options. There's literally something for everyone!
