5 Benefits of Cellulose Insulation: An Interview with:Owner /Founder Todd L. Cox of Weatherization Experts Inc.

By Todd Cox

Tell us a little bit about your company and the services you offer:

Weatherization Experts (the Company) was formed in 1998 to provide cellulose insulation to the greater Oklahoma City area housing industry. After 21 years of construction experience, the owner and founder of the company, Todd L. Cox, became interested in cellulose while preparing to build his personal home. His research showed that Fiberglass was a vastly underperforming product when compared to cellulose, even though Fiberglass dominated the housing industry. In addition to the performance issue, he discovered that Fiberglass posed health risks and fire hazards not associated with cellulose, which also has mold, mildew, and insect repellent properties. These characteristics had special meaning and importance to Todd, who was, and now retired after 22 years as an Oklahoma City firefighter with highly specialized hazardous materials and EMT training. Recent research revealed the dangers associated the use of spray foam insulation. Our website goes into more depth explaining these concerns.

The energy cost savings he experienced with his own home, combined with the fact that cellulose as an insulation option was virtually unknown to the general public, presented a unique business opportunity that Todd chose to pursue. Today, after 16 consecutive years of sales growth, the company not only targets new housing construction, but also existing housing retrofit and commercial construction for application of its cellulose insulation, cotton fiber, radiant and water-heater products.

In late 2003, Mr. Cox continued his technical training by obtaining his Home Energy Rating System (H.E.R.S.) certification from the Kansas Building Science Institute graduating #1 in his class with a 98% GPA. This dramatically expanded his technical knowledge and understanding of home energy efficiency, especially as it related to the "House as a System" concept, promoted by the Energy Star Program. This established him as a leader, without a peer among the insulation providers/installers in the Oklahoma City market. As a result, Weatherization Experts continues to lead the field in producing home energy efficiency.

From its inception the company's strategy has been to secure the best products, equipment, and training that money can buy, and to hire competent applicator technicians who can produce a quality of service unmatched in the insulation industry. The formula has proven successful, as evidenced by the increasing demand for the company's products and services, which continues to strengthen and grow each year. The company also sponsors home shows, training programs for builders and architects, and attends trade shows throughout the year to promote the need and value associated with home energy efficiency.

Early 2009 a satisfied Oklahoma City client wrote a straight "A" Report on "ANGIE'S LIST" which put Weatherization Experts on the radar for others to read about the experience and results one can achieve by applying their solutions to the given situation. Currently they have 177 reports, maintain an "A" grade, have received the prestigious "Super Service Award" seven times, and four years in a row. Only the top 5% of contractors in the nation receive this coveted Award. They have maintained an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau for over a decade as well.

Technical training, superior products and service, and a growing reputation for excellence, provide the company with a firm foundation upon which to build for the future. It is uniquely positioned as the only true choice for consumers in the Oklahoma City market who command an established, reputable business to satisfy their demand for home energy efficiency, and the financial and quality of life benefits that result.

Infrared thermography is a well-accepted method of imaging and evaluating the thermal efficiency of building insulation, doors, windows and other penetrations, along with the performance and condition of heating and cooling systems. Temperature deviations which may indicate larger problems are rendered visible, allowing improvements to be carried out with certainty. No matter the age of the structure, an infrared scan always proves beneficial, providing fast detection for fast action!

  • Improve homes comfort
  • Save energy
  • Save money

High utility bills are not just an insulation issue.

Your heating and cooling ductwork may be wasting a lot of your energy dollars. Your home's duct system carries the air from your home's furnace and central air conditioner to each room. Unfortunately, many duct systems are poorly insulated or not insulated properly.

Ducts that leak heated air into unheated spaces can add hundreds of dollars each year to your heating and cooling bills. Insulating ducts that are in unconditioned spaces is usually very cost effective.

Sealing your ducts to prevent leaks is even more important if the ducts are located in an unconditioned area such as an attic or vented crawl space. If the supply ducts are leaking, heated or cooled air can be forced out unsealed joints and lost. Duct leakage as high as 15% to 25% requires the need for 1 ton of air conditioning to overcome the leakage. as you can imagine this dramatically drops the overall efficiency of the HVAC unit.

In addition, unconditioned air can also be drawn into return ducts through unsealed joints. In the summer, hot attic air can be drawn in, increasing the load on the air conditioner. In the winter, your furnace will have to work longer to keep your house comfortable. Either way, your energy losses cost you money.

EXAMPLE: a 25% duct leakage (average home tested) could logically cause a 50 to 75% in-efficiency because of the pressure differentials drawing in unconditioned air simultaneous to the unit working to create conditioned air. Ductwork is YOUR #1 priority and the major cause of higher utilities, lower comfort, and air-borne contaminants brought into the conditioned space.

Weatherization Experts can save you time and money by providing expert guidance at the start of your project. Let us put our experience to work for you. After all, it's our business to stay current on new technology, application techniques, product performance and code requirements. We are routinely called out to repair homes that are less than five years old yet have comfort issues, high energy use, or have indoor air quality problems. In almost every case, the problem could have been prevented during the design and construction process by properly applying the right insulation product. Let us help you do it right the first time. What you don't know could prove costly, if not hazardous.

Weatherization Experts supplies insulation solutions and advice to energy conscious homeowners and quality builders. We use only the safest, highest quality materials, and we are meticulous in how we install them. The result is a superior energy savings that lasts ? guaranteed not to deteriorate over time.

We install insulation in both new and existing structures using pressurized sprayers that get the insulation into even the most hard-to-reach areas to eliminate air infiltration. And because our wet-spray cellulose insulation contains an adhesive, it stays in place and won't settle over time. This is our most popular service because it has the fastest payback period and the results can be seen on the next month's utility bills.

Can you explain what cellulose insulation is?

We use Xcell® Cellulose Insulation, it has No Man-Made Fibers to Irritate Skin and Lungs

There are no health concerns with Xcell® cellulose insulation. Since it combines recycled newsprint with a naturally-occurring, non-toxic fire retardant - 100% boric acid formulation for its excellent fire-retardant characteristics. Borates are naturally-occurring compounds that are harmless to humans when included in cellulose insulation. You can be certain it's a product you can live with!

Xcell® 's Class 1 fire rating meets or exceeds all requirements of local and national building codes. Its highly-efficient thermal barrier actually repels intense heat, and outperforms conventional insulation by forming a barrier to protect other more combustible construction materials. All-Borate fire-retardant formula

What are some of the benefits of this insulation?

  • Class A Fire Rating
  • Resistant to insects and rodents
  • Resist to mold
  • Superior Sound Control
  • Much Higher R-Value per inch compared to fiberglass

Can you talk briefly about cost of this process?

Most existing homes run around +/-$1 per sq. ft which will include our strategic air-sealing process along with any other remedies needed to achieve optimal results.

New Construction:

Starts around $2.50 per foot (living space) for the walls and attic and has options to consider adding for sound-control between rooms walls and floors, insulation of garages etc.
