2014 Interior Design Trends: An Interview with the owner and lead designer of Designs by MK in Edmond, Oklahoma, Macy White.

By Macy Mason

Tell us a little bit about your company and its foundation.

Right out of college I was asked to work as a furniture dealer, working with government facilities. I learned how to deal with very intense personalities and very basic furniture and material selections. "Would you like a black chair or a gray chair?" For lack of better words, it was SO LAME. My creativity needed an escape! I graduated from Oklahoma Christian University receiving my bachelors in Interior Design and did not feel that I was truly doing what I was called to do by being at this job. I quickly had a few friends ask me to help them with their homes. I surrounded myself with other professional interior designers and amazing prayer warriors and I soon decided to give this Interior Design thing a chance. In 3 months time I doubled my income and God made it very clear that I needed to be doing this full time. I left a secure job and took a leap of faith with starting my own business. God brought the right people into my life at the right time. That was almost 2 years ago. I have grown now to a two designer team with an intern. I love people and how every client and project is completely different! This is more than just a hobby for me. This is my calling. This business was based on faith and a designer against boring and non-semimetal spaces. Your home is an outlet for your personality to go free! My job is to make that happen.

What are some of the services your company provides?

We provide services from needing a new pillow to making selections for a remodel you are doing. Some services may include: exterior paint selections, gutter color selections, eve color selections, brick selections, interior paint color selections, wood selections, furniture selections, accessory selections, lighting fixture selections, flooring selections, tile selections, inspiration boards, space planning, purchasing of new design concept items created by Designs by MK, searching and purchasing, and liaison between client and tradesmen, and many more things!

How do you make sure you're keeping up with current design trends?

Making sure you are in "in the know" with design trends is super important! I make sure to look through many Magazines, search online at design websites, and keep a good communication with other designers.

What are current bathroom trends that you see are popular right now?

Bathrooms are turning into just as much as a retreat as your master bedroom. Mostly people like to have them give off a Spa like feel. This would include neutral colors with soft blue pallets. Most important details would include stone and wood materials to bring the outdoors in.

What are current kitchen trends that you see are popular right now?

Kitchens are some of my favorite spaces to do. Trends currently would include: subway tile, quartz, and butcher block. Neutral colors palette with pops of bold accent colors incorporated through the island or millwork area that would stand out. Minimalistic design for sure! Open shelving is a huge hit right now. For those of us that are not clean in the kitchen (aka: Macy White), I still enjoy my closed kitchen cabinets but am anti clutter on the countertops to keep with the "less is more" design concept. There is much more painting of the cabinets instead of staining completely.

Are there certain colors and fabrics that are in right now?

I would say that Burlap, striped cottons, and pastels would be the biggest winners right now.

Are darker colored wood elements more popular than lighter colored ones?

Wood this year, I have noticed has gone from the floor to the walls and ceiling accents. Pallet woods are used everywhere! People love the raw wood look. They really like mixing the dark and light woods together as well.
